7 Best Books I Read In 2017 + 7 Books I Can't Wait For In 2018

January 13, 2018

If you read my 2017 Recap post, you probably know that I read a lot of books in 2017 (136, if you were wondering). I've done two posts that are kinda like this before - a 7 books for your summer tbr, and 7 for your fall tbr - and now I'll be showing you my 7 favorite five-star reads from 2017 that should be on your tbr.

7 Best Books I Read in 2017 + 7 Books I Can't Wait For In 2018 [post title image]

I read 136 books in 2017, and 14 of them more five-star reads. So (with lots of screaming and pulling my hair out and flopping on the ground), I managed to wittle it down to my seven favorite five-star books I read in 2017 for the sake of this post.

If you are not prepared for your tbr to grow (*cough* me *cough*), please leave now xD.

In no particular order, here are my 7 favorite books from 2017!

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I was very excited when I heard that Marissa Meyer was going to do a retelling of the Queen of Hearts, but I wasn't sure how she was going to pull it off? I mean, to give the Queen of Hearts a realistic backstory = #HARD. But she pulled it off splendidly! I was drowning in all the feels (and I may have had more fun with this book than I normally would have, because I read it with my sister xD), and the whole thing was very epic. Loved it.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Do you want to know how long I've been hearing hype for Stiefvater's books? FOREVER. So when I found a gorgeous, like-new copy of The Scorpio Races at a thrift store, of course I bought it xD. And I've been hooked ever since I read that line on the back of the book - "it is the first day of November, and so, today, someone will die". Epicness. I can see why some writers call Stiefvater Queen xD. I haven't read any of her other books, but this one was magic.

The Clockwork Three by Matthew J. Kirby

So do I have a book that I randomly picked up on a whim on this list of my 7 best reads from 2017? YES I DO. I was at a book sale with my mom and sister (and gathering so many books that a lady came up to me and asked if I wanted a bag xD), and found this one. The cover looked really cool, and I thought I might have recognized it, so I added it to the pile. And GRACIOUS, am I ever glad I did that. This book is a gem, I loved it so very much. And the characters are GOLDEN, so of course that helps xD.

A Time To Rise by Nadine Brandes

Can I just say that I don't know WHY it took me so long to get onto the Out Of Time bandwagon? I didn't read A Time To Die until I reviewed it for the Time To Rise blog tour, but after that first book, I was HOOKED - and now A Time To Rise (the last book in the trilogy) has made it into my top 7 from 2017! I love this series, so, so much, you have no idea (honestly, if anyone ever asks me for book recommendations, this is always one of the first series I will mention), and its ending didn't disappoint (even though I was sad that it was over *cries*). It definitely deserves to be on this list.

The Warden And The Wolf King by Andrew Peterson

So Jonathan and Faith were the ones who convinced me to give The Wingfeather Saga a shot, and WHAT WAS I DOING before this series entered my life? (being a smol pathetic bookdragon, that's what) It's such an epic, epic series, and every book is better than the last. And this book (the finale) is INCREDIBLE and full of feels and I just love it. Obviously, it had to be on this list xD.

Some Kind of Happiness and A Branch Of Silver, A Branch Of Gold

And we're squeezing these two in together, just because I don't own them, and thus was not able to take pictures of them (#sadness). But that doesn't make them any less worthy of this list! Anne Elisabeth's A Branch of Silver, A Branch of Gold is a stunning MASTERPIECE, it's so beautiful <3. And the same can be said of Some Kind Of Happiness, I love that book so much. And both of these two were rereads, so they must be pretty good to make it onto this list when I was reading them for the second/third time.

So there are my best five-star reads from 2017! But that year is behind us, isn't it? I can't read any more good books and credit them to the lovely 2017 ... but I CAN start looking forward to the epic books that are coming to us in 2018! SO here are 7 books that I'm waiting (very impatiently) for in 2018 ...

Reclaiming Shilo Snow, Unbreakable, and Fawkes - 2018 YA releases

Can we just mention how beautiful those three covers look together? Stunning <3.  BUT that's besides the point (or is it? *cough* #shallowbookdragon) - I'm beyond excited for Unbreakable, Reclaiming Shilo Snow, and Fawkes! Especially Fawkes. I've been waiting for another Nadine Brandes book since I finished the Out Of Time Series xD. So I'm counting down the days until I can purchase these beauties.

The Traitor's Game, Legendary, Tess of The Road, and A Thosaund Perfect Notes COVERS - 2018 YA releases

Again, THE COVERS <3. I can't with covers. And I hope the insides of these books live up to their beautiful outsides! I'm super excited for each of these books (beacuse CARAVAL SEQUEL and our own lovely CAIT DREWS and then there is a GORGEOUS DRAGON on Tess of The Road), but I'm especially excited for The Traitor's Game.  Jennifer Nielsen has not managed to disappoint me yet, so I'm extremely excited to see what she does with this beautiful book.

*squints* AND ... none of those books come out for multiple weeks. HOW EVER shall I survive??

   ...

If I never come back, you can rest assured that I died of suspense. We'll see what happens xD.

what's the best book (or three!) that you read in 2017?
what's a book that you can't wait for that's coming out in 2018?

  1. Nooo, don't die! We need you here to torment us by adding to our TBRs. On second thought . . . XD

This year, I read The Outsiders, Cinder, Nightfall . . . yeah, it was a good year for reading.

I'll have to read The Scorpio Races, with all I've been hearing about it. The Warden and the Wolf King is so good, though, especially after you stop crying at that ending. :D Can't wait for Fawkes!!

    1. Well in that case *promptly starts planning what my next '7 books for your tbr' post is going to be* xD.

CINDER AND NIGHTFALL - oh, those two were so good! <3 And I've heard a ton about The Outsiders, so maybe I should check that one out...and YES about The Warden and the Wolf King! I had to curl up on the couch and deal with ALL THE FEELS after that one ended xD.

      Thanks for commenting, Brianna! <3

Yes - I finally read (most of, oops) the Lunar Chronicles. And Nightfall was amazing! <3 You really should check out The Outsiders! I could NOT put it down. Ugh, that ending to the saga . . . I aspire to crushing people's feelings like that. Maybe someday. XD

  2. AHHH THE CLOCKWORK THREEEE. One of my favorite books of all time <3 I've also wanted to read Heartless for a while! I think The Martian by Andy Weir was my very favorite book of last year.

I'M CRYING THE LEGENDARY COVER IS SO GORGEOUS. I'm also looking forward to Bitter Winter by Jaye L. Knight and Sightwitch by Susan Dennard.

    1. IT'S JUST SO GORGEOUS - the character development is spot on, oh my goodness <3. Glad to find a fellow fan! *highfive* (and I'll have check out The Martian, because that title is really cool ;))

ISN'T IT?? I'm so, so excited to buy it (and Caraval! I have yet to own a copy...) and have the beautiful thing on my bookshelf - and take pictures of it for you guys xD. And you'll have to tell me your opinion on Bitter Winter once it's available for us all to read! I'M SO EXCITED FOR IT <3.

  3. I personally can’t wait for Five Poisoned Apples. Cause ya know. I WANT TO KNOW WHO WON.

    And also Fawkes. Because FAWKES.

Caraval 2 looks like it’ll be really cool! I’m late to the Caraval bandwagon, but I’m in now.

My favorite books? Oh boy. I think I did a post on this a while back. I’m very lavish with my five-star reviews (I probably shouldn’t be, but oh well), but I think that the Goldstone Wood series and the Blades of Acktar (as well as the Girl Who Could See and A Monster Calls) were my absolute favorites of the year. ^_^

    1. Oh my good gracious - YES! I'm slowly dying as I sit here and wait for April 2nd, haha. I hope that we both get in, that would be beyond amazing.

The Girl Who Could See! <3 I read that book a couple days before it came out (...and I still don't know how that happened, but somehow my library got it early? xD), and LOVED IT. And I've heard so much about A Monster Calls that I NEED to get my hands on it xD.

I hope 2018 is full of great books for you, Faith! <3

  4. I love this! Thanks for sharing! :D I JUST started reading the Wingfeather Saga (only the first one so far) and it's so fun! Have you seen the adorable mini-film thing?? IT WAS SO CUTE. I def need to get my hands on Branch of Silver and read it... And EEP I'm excited about Fawkes too! The other covers of the upcoming ones look lovely too! :D Gah, I don't know what my favorite book of 2017 was -- I had to do a post about 15. XD AND THERE ARE SO MANY BOOKS COMING OUT I CAN'T WAIT TO READ, ACK. I had to do a ginormous post about that too... :P Anyhoo, I LOVE bookish wrapup posts, so this one was loverly! ^_^

  5. I read A LOT of great books in 2017 year. The Blood Race by K.A Emmons, The Girl Who Could See by Kara Swanson, The Lunar Chronicles, Heartless, and I'm still feeling from Heartless. AHH, THAT WAS SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!

For 2018, I'm looking forward to Worlds Apart by K.A Emmnons, Fawkes, my book (totally not self promo XD), Legendary, and I don't know what else. I have a hard time keeping track of what's coming out. XD I think this is going to be a great book year. :D

    1. I'm laaaaate to jump onto the Blood Race bandwagon, but I'm planning to jump on soon! I want to read that book so bad, it looks AMAZING. And yes, Heartless! I was basically a smol puddle of feels when it was over. IT WAS SO GOOD AND YET SO BAD AT THE SAME TIME xD.

*gasp* Wait, wait - are you saying you're publishing a book in 2018?? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT? I must get more information about this! xD

  6. Best book I read in 2017? How can I pick just one? How about I pick seventeen? I discovered a new author last year: Lemony Snicket. Why I didn't read his books as a child I have no idea, but I LOVE them! A Series of Unfortunate Events was awesome (it has thirteen books), but I think I liked All the Wrong Questions even better (four books, so that makes seventeen total). His books are so ridiculous, but I like how he has good themes underneath it all. Of course I had other favorite books, but that would take to long to talk about. xD

The book I absolutely can't wait for in 2018 is easy to choose. Ted Dekker, one of my most favorite authors, is FINALLY coming out with a new series!!!!!! What makes it even better is that I THINK the main character shares my name! (except it's spelled differently.) I follow him on Facebook, and he posted a picture of the first page pulled up on his laptop, and I was able to read it AND THE MAIN CHARACTER HAS MY NAME. The series is supposed to explain a ton of stuff that happened in some of his other series, and I ABSOLUTELY CAN'T WAIT!!!

Your book list looks awesome. I love Anne Elisabeth Stengl! And beautiful covers!! Question: Do you take pictures of the covers yourself, or do you just find cover images on the Internet?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Okay so CONFESSION: I haven't read anything by Lemony Snicket! But I NEED TO, because I feel like I'm missing out on something epic xD. I'm glad you liked them so much! And it's great that he's written so many books, I love it when a good author has written a lot of stuff ;).

WAIT WHAT TED DEKKER IS WRITING A NEW SERIES AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT?? Oh my good gracious I'M EXCITED! It's so, so cool that the main character shares your first name *highfive*. Do you know which of his other series it's supposed to be explaining?

The one that are just the covers (like Some Kind Of Happiness, and the ones I can't wait for in 2018) are from Goodreads, but the pictures of the books on a bookshelf are ones that I've taken myself ;).

      Delete
    2. Okay, so I just found out more about Ted's new book! It turns out that the character with my name is probably a side character, not the main character. The series is called Beyond the Circle, and from the description of it, I think it's going to refer back to the Circle trilogy. It's going to be AWESOME!!!

  7. I loved Some Kind of Happiness.

And AREN'T YOU JUST DYING FOR CAIT'S BOOK??? I know I am. I'm counting down the days...

    1. It was so feels-y, oh gracious <3.

Um, YES! I can't wait to see how much feels and witty dialogue she manages to cram into one book xD. ONLY A FEW MORE MONTHS TO GO (in which I shall die from impatience).

  8. This whole post makes my book-loving heart happy! ^_^

Heartless is literally the only one I've read that you listed, but basically ALL the others are on my TBR list. And I just finished A Time to Speak literally yesterday and can't wait to jump into A Time to Rise because SDLKJFLSJDLJ:KJF. THESE BOOKS. THEY'RE DESTROYING ME IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. I'm loving them! Back ACK. All the feels. *collapses*

A Branch of Silver, a Branch of Gold is one I can't BELIEVE I haven't gotten yet! I meant to read it basically right when it came out, but then I forgot about it and keep forgetting to get myself a copy. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??? I NEEDS IT.

I'm SUPER excited for Fawkes to come out! I've totally jumped on the Nadine Brandes bandwagon. And of course I'm ecstatic for Cait and her book! I think 2018 is gonna be a fabulous year of books! :D

YOU FINISHED A TIME TO SPEAK. Oh my gracious - what did you think of it??? Isn't it amazing? THE CHARACTERS, I JUST <3 <3. I can't wait for you to get into A Time To Rise, because it only gets BETTER.

Oh, my - CHRISTINE, you need to get your hands on it! I honestly think its one of - if not THE - best thing Anne Elisabeth has written!

SO MUCH EXCITEMENT. HOW SHALL WE BOOKDRAGONS SURVIVE THE WAIT? (carefully and with much chocolate and possible weeping xD)

  9. I can't wait for "Fawkes", "A Thousand Perfect Notes", and the Renegades sequel! :) Hmm, best books in 2017 (bc I CANNOT pick just one): the Hunger Games trilogy, Renegades (even tho #issues), The Scorpio Races, and Moriarty.
So many great books coming out this year! Now I just have to wait..... :):)

  11. I won an ARC of The Traitor's Game, and IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD. Not as good as The Ascendance Triloyg, imo, and the plot was a little cliche, but I thought it was executed VERY well. *flops and flails* I hope you like it! :D

OH, GOODNESS, FAWKES. *squawks for Fawkes* I'M EXCITED! I mean, I haven't read a single Nadine Brandes book yet, but the hype about her Out of Time series is kinda contagious. It's weird, I know.

Great post, Savannah! I hope you have lots of fabulous reads this year!

I'M BEYOND EXCITED to get my hands on that gorgeous thing <3. And honestly, I don't think any of Jennifer A. Nielsen's books will ever top The Ascendance Trilogy, so I'll probably end up agreeing with you :D.

Nope, not weird at all - I was majorly excited when A Time To Rise was coming out, and I hadn't even read the other books yet! xD WE SHALL FANGIRL TOGETHER WHEN THAT GORGEOUS THING FINALLY GETS TO OUR BOOKSHELVES <3.

Same to you, my friend! <3

  12. I would say the best books I read were That Hideous Strength (by CS Lewis), The Door Before (by ND Wilson) and... well, for non-rereads, Swan Knight's Son (by John C. Wright), and for rereads, The Nicholas Book (by William Chad Newsom). Love them all!
Books I’m excited for in 2018 would be the third (and untitled) book in The Blackgaard Chronicles. Because the mystery is DRIVING ME CRAZY (even though I know part of it already). And Five Poisoned Apples, obviously. Because, like y'all, I WANT TO KNOW WHO WON. (And because I want to find out more about Asher Grey!!)
