The 100-for-100 Challenge = I Survived

September 15, 2016

Okay, so the title may be a bit of an exaggeration.

   I barely survived.

... you probably want me to elaborate, don't you?

I WROTE 70,391 WORDS. Over the course of 100 days.

Just had to get that out there. Now I can explain what the 100-for-100 challenge was.

Basically, it was a challenge held by Go Teen Writers to write 100 words (of the same story, unless you had to switch for some reason) each day, for 100 days. You were allowed one 'grace day' each week, and one 'grace week' during the whole period.

I added an extra bit to the challenge that said 'take no grace days' and another that stated 'never write only 100 words'. AND I MADE IT. I might have written only 101 words sometimes, and I desperately wanted to take a break after I finished the first draft of my novel (read: I was exhausted) ... but I decided to stick with the plan.  I think that may be why I was able to write 70k words XD.

SO I basically forced myself to write 100 words every single day, no matter how busy (or tired!) I was. It was so hard sometimes, but I'm so glad that I did! I definitely upped my word count, and it got me in the habit of writing everyday.

And even though I'm feeling a little empty of words right now (hey, 100 days of hard writing will do that to you), I'm incredibly glad that I joined the 100-for-100 challenge. I now have a third-draft novella being beta-read, the zero-draft startings of it's prequel and sequel, and a whole lot of satisfaction.

   Totally worth it *nods*.

Have you ever done the 100-for-100 challenge (or something similar)? Do you think you would?

  2. My goodness. Over 70,000 words! CONGRATULATIONS! That's absolutely insane (in a good way, of course)! I'm actually doing something similar to what GTW did! Just for myself though. For the month of September, I'm writing 100 words daily! Its difficult sometimes, that's for sure!:) I can't believe that you took no grace days! That's so hard! I've given myself only three days off for September.;)
    Fun post!

  4. AGHHHHH SAVVY YOU ARE A NINJA OF WRITERLY AMAZINGNESS. 70k words in 100 days is SO EPIC!!! I couldn't have done that ever. (that may have something to do with the fact that I generally make myself take a writing break on Sunday just to refresh for the new week) But still!!! *explosions of confetti* That is just SO cool. :D

Also, can I just say how proud of you I am that you've posted every day so far. :P

    1. YES I AM A WRITING NINJA XD. But seriously though, that was SO hard - worth it, but HARD.

Thanks, Jane! I feel like I'm posting WAY to much, but maybe I'm not. I already have ... oh, about four other posts all written up already. We'll see how much patience I have in waiting to post those :D.

    2. A bit like what I'm expecting NaNo to be. *dies just thinking how close it is* I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW QUICKLY IT'S COMING UP AND I STILL HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I'M DOING.

No, not way too much, but maybe you should spread them out a bit just so we can relish every post. :P Four more? Cool! Can't wait to read them. :D

    1. WELL it's actually kinda complicated - I wrote a novel length amount (and it certainly felt like a novel length amount!) but a lot of those words went into the multiple drafts of Killing Snow. That story benefited so much from this challenge :D.Thank you, Emily!

  6. Wow. I'm impressed.

    What story did you do??

    1. I did multiple stories - a few different drafts of Killing Snow (I rewrote the whole thing and it took FOR-EVER), and the zero-drafts of it's prequel and sequel. It was so much fun! Maybe I'll try to convince you to do it with me next year if they do it again :D.

    2. Oh dear. . . I'm not sure I'm a survivalist like you. . .

      *whisper* What's a zero-draft??

      Delete
    3. *whisper* A zero-draft is an unofficial term for the thing that comes even before the first draft (which for me is when I make a giant compilation of snippets that will go somewhere in the story. I just don't know where :D)

  9. Congrats! The challenge was so fun, and awesome. Near the end I would go to bed, and then jerk awake and scramble for something to write on because I forgot. :)
I was traveling for like 2 months during the challenge, but i did it. I think I got like 17,000 or so, but so impressed with you! Maybe next time I'll be able to try to go for that.

  11. Oh. My. Word. SAVANNAH. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: that is a crazy awesome number of words. And you didn't take a single break?! I am in awe right now. O.O Writing 32k was hard enough, never mind pumping out over TWICE that amount! Way to go, girl!

    1. THANK YOU! It was SO hard to hit the 70k mark (I had to get a ton of words in during the last week or so), but I'm glad I made it :D. Good for you for getting 32k, by the way! Like ... you were WAY more busy than me and you still won the challenge! *highfives all around*
